After ‘somewhat convoluted’ saga, Conefrey to purchase LeBaron Hills

Dec 12, 2023

LAKEVILLE — After over a month of uncertainty, the ownership of Lakeville's LeBaron Hills Country Club is coming into view.

According to a liquor license transfer application filed with the Lakeville Select Board, Poquoy Brook Golf Club owner Brian Conefrey will be the new owner of Le Baron Hills.

Conefrey did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

At the Monday, Dec. 11 Lakeville Select Board meeting, Craig Medeiros, a lawyer representing Conefrey, described the process by which Conefrey would purchase LeBaron Hills as “somewhat convoluted.”

Medeiros said that the plan for LeBaron Hills going forward is to preserve it as a privately held golf club.

“Essentially the operation is going to stay very similar,” Medeiros explained, although the new owner hopes to “maybe drum up some additional business.”

In November, LeBaron Hills told its members that Conefrey would be purchasing the club.

“LeBaron Hills is utilizing a foreclosure only as a vehicle to sell the club to Brian Conefrey,” the club said in a Friday, Nov. 3 email. “We have determined it is the best way to manage the legal process and clear title to ensure a smooth transfer.”

“We are not anticipating any impact to the club or membership,” the email continued.

Then, it was announced that LeBaron Hills would be sold in a Dec. 6 foreclosure auction hosted by Paul E. Saperstein Co.

The auction was an open auction and anyone could have submitted a bid to purchase the property.

“It is a real foreclosure auction and not a formality,” said auctioneer Samantha Saperstein. “The property may be sold at auction to a third party.”

At the auction, the LeBaron Hills property was sold, but the property wasn’t sold directly to Conefrey.

The exact details of how the property will be transferred to Conefrey are unclear, but now, according to the license transfer application, Conefrey will be the new LeBaron Hills owner.

Medeiros did not respond to requests for further comment or clarification on the process.
