Lakeville Council on Aging welcomes the Highwaymen

Nov 9, 2023

LAKEVILLE – Far from Folsom Prison, members of the Lakeville Council on Aging sang along to tunes written by Johnny Cash and The Highwaymen during musician Matt York’s performance on Thursday, Nov. 9.

According to York, although much of Cash’s music depicts issues faced by prisoners, Cash was never one himself.

“He spoke a lot on prison reform,” said York, who referenced Cash’s performances at Folsom State Prison in 1968.

Between performances of hit songs such as “Jackson” and “Ring of Fire,” York told stories about the country music supergroup The Highwaymen including Cash, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, and Kris Kristofferson.

“Between the four of them there were a total of 13 wives and 27 children,” said York. “So they kept busy.”

The event was organized by the Men’s Social Club of the Lakeville Council on Aging according to director Lori Fahey.

Bruce Baptiste of Lakeville decided to organize the group after attending a meeting of the Middleboro Council on Aging’s Social Club.

“I thought, we should do something like that here,” said Baptiste. “But it’s been a slow start.”

Being less than a year old, the group put on the event to help recruit new members.

“We decided that we weren’t going to get discouraged and kept plugging along,” said Fahey.

The Men’s Social Club meets every Thursday at 10 a.m at the Lakeville Council on Aging.
