Lakeville Special Town Meeting to be held next week

Nov 7, 2023

LAKEVILLE — Voters of Lakeville will be asked to vote on 10 items at the town’s Special Town Meeting on Monday, Nov. 13.

The Town Meeting will start at 6:30 p.m. and will take place at the Apponequet Regional High School auditorium. All registered voters are entitled to attend, participate, and vote.

Items on the agenda include funding for a police boat motor, fines for fire alarms, and rules regarding electronic signs.

Voters will be asked to vote on appropriating $19,000 for a new boat motor for the police department. The new motor has been needed since the department started using its boat for its dive team, Lakeville Police Chief Matthew Perkins said.

"We've discovered that the boat is underpowered when we use it for dive operations,” Perkins explained. “When we put extra people on the boat with all the tanks and dive equipment, it can't even get out of the water.”

If approved, the old boat motor will go to the Lakeville Fire Department for use on the fire department boat, Perkins said.

The creation of fines for false fire alarms applicable to multifamily residential, commercial and industrial properties will also be up for vote. Lakeville Fire Chief Michael O’Brien said that false fire alarms can result in increased overtime costs for the department because they must respond to all fire alarms.

If approved at the Special Town Meeting, properties that have more than three false alarms within six months will be subject to a fine.

Changing the date for Town Meeting from May to June will also be up for vote.
