LAKEVILLE – The Council on Aging has a wide variety of events planned over the next few months for Lakeville residents. 

On Thursday, June 16, the senior center will host the second annual Father’s Day Game Day at 11:00. This year is all about the Patriots. Game day appetizers include chicken wings and chips and salsa. Lunch will be provided at 12 p.m. by Lindley Traveling Chef. There will be outdoor cornhole along with other tabletop games to play.

The hosts of the“Untold Patriot’s Stories” podcast Dave Usher and Scott Pruzack will be at the event this year to share an inspirational look into the mindset of successful athletes and those who cover them. Attendees are encouraged to wear their favorite team attire.

The Council on Aging Outreach Services are available to assist seniors and their families on Mondays and Tuesdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. by appointment only. Some services available for referrals are fuel assistance, food bank, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, caregiver services and housing. Friday morning cafés are held from 9 to 11 a.m. Coffee, tea, juices, water, and plenty of snacks will be provided. No sign-ups are necessary and this is not restricted to Lakeville seniors. 

The Lakeville Select Board will be visiting the Council on Aging on Friday, May 10 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. 

On Monday, May 13, representative Norman Orrall will be visiting the COA on Monday, May 13 from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

State Senator Michael Rodrigues will be hosting office hours at the COA on Wednesday, May 22 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Please feel free to stop by with any questions, comments or concerns. Senator Rodrigues and his team are happy to help in any way possible. 

Attorney Adam Bond of Middleboro is offering free 20-minute consultations for Lakeville seniors by appointment only Tuesday, May 28 from 10 to 11 a.m.

Blood Pressure with Carol will be held in the craft room on Monday, May 6 and May 20 from 12 to 1:30 p.m. No appointment is necessary. 

The Lakeville Fire Department will be at the COA on Friday, May 3, May 17 and May 31 during morning cafés to take blood pressure. No appointment is necessary.

S.H.I.N.E. (Serving the Health Insurance Needs of Everyone) Counselors are available by appointment. Call the office at 508-947-7224 for more information. 

The Parkinson’s Support Group will be meeting every first and third Tuesday of the month at 10 a.m. in the drop-in room.

A Grief/Loss Support group will come to the Lakeville COA on Thursday, May 2 at 1:00 p.m. The group offers a different quality of support and connection to that comes from being with people who have also experienced some type of loss. Three movies will be showing during the month of May: “Queen Bees”, on Friday, May 3 at 1 p.m., “Barbie” on Friday, May 10 at 1 p.m. and Oppenheimer on Thursday, June 6 at 12 p.m. Admission is $2.00 per movie. Call the COA office at 508-947-7224 and press 1 to sign up. 

Over the next several months, the senior center will offer several bus trips for seniors. Upcoming trips include: a Charles River Boat Cruise & meal at the Cheesecake Factory in Cambridge, MA on Wednesday, May 22 ($125 per person), a trip to Heritage Museums & Gardens with lunch at the Daniel Webster Inn on Friday, June 7 ($125 per person) and an Indian Princess Cruise and lunch with pickup in Lakeville on Wednesday, July 17 ($140 per person). Brain Builders classes will continue on Tuesday, May 7 and May 21 at 1 p.m. This is a community-based experience that enables attendees to enhance their brain fitness. Sign-ups are required. Call the COA office at 508-947-7224 and press 1. 

The COA will host the Art of Technology workshop on Friday, May 10 at 11:00 a.m. presented by All American Assisted Living at Raynham. The workshop will teach attendees the basics of smartphones and surfing the internet. Sign-ups begin immediately. Call the COA office at 508-947-7224 and press 1 to sign up. 

On Tuesday, June 11 at 10:00 a.m. the senior center will host a Gong Bath sound experience. A Gong Bath consists of playing several instruments that include the Gongs, Drums, Rainsticks, Ocean Drum and Chimes. It is a multi-dimensional sound experience that offers profound relaxation and refreshes the mind, body and spirit. Sign-ups are required and start immediately. Call 508-947-7224 and press 1. On Monday, May 13 at 1 p.m., there will be S.A.L.T. (Seniors and Law Enforcement Together) Triad Council meeting at the Lakeville COA. Plymouth County’s TRIAD is a community policing initiative, whose primary goal is to increase seniors’ safety through education and crime prevention. All are welcome to attend this forum. S.A.L.T. Council meetings will be held the second Monday of every quarter, on the following dates: Monday, May 13, Monday, August 12 and Monday, November 18, all at 1 p.m. 

On Tuesday, May 14 at 1 p.m., Internal Medicine physician Bob Friedman will be at the senior center to discuss Opioid Use Disorders. He will speak on how this problem has evolved in our country and its diagnosis and treatment. Please call 508-947-7224 and press 1 to sign up.

The Senior Center will have Cribbage games for those who want to play every Wednesday from 1 to 4 p.m. in the back drop-in room, starting on May 1. Sign-ups are appreciated but not required. Call 508-947-7224.

Come to the senior center on Thursday, May 16 at 1 p.m., for the all-new program Drums Alive to experience pulsating rhythms, dynamic movements and a full-body workout. The class is free and space is limited. Call the COA at 508-947-7224 to sign up.

Registered dietitian Ashley Whewell is holding a Nutrition Simplified class Friday, May 17 at 1 p.m. She will be covering the importance of hydration, including tips on how to hydrate without adding more water into your day-to-day life. Learn the basics of Estate Planning with Attorney Rebecca Spinner of Surprenant & Beneski, P.C. on Thursday, May 23 at 1 p.m. The information session will teach attendees about topics such as the importance of quality foundational documents and how to protect your earnings from long-term care costs. For those who like to sing, the senior center is looking for participants to join the “Senior Singers” group. The group will meet on Wednesdays from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Right now, the COA is gathering interest in this group. The COA will provide more information about a start date in future newsletters. 

A presentation by Edward Leonard of Lakeville on The Overlooked Legacy of Ted Williams will take place at 1 p.m. Friday May 24 at the Council on Aging. Ted had an initial legacy of being a slugger, but he was also a Marine fighter pilot in the Korean War. Following this, he spent 10 summers in Lakeville managing the camp he created with the help of his brother, Bernie, Albert Cassidy, and Les Warburton of Lakeville. The cosmetology students of Old Colony will offer free manicures on Thursday, May 30, from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Students will offer a hand and arm massage as well as a polish application. Learn what essential oils are and how to use them on Thursday, May 30 at 1 p.m. in the “summer oils recipe class” at the senior center. Sign-ups are required. Call 508-947-7224.

Congregate meals are now held on Mondays and Wednesdays at 12:00 p.m. on the following dates: May 1, 6, 8, 13, 15, 20, 22 and 29. Meals are prepared by OCES meal site coordinator Dawn Rivers. The 2024 Horseshoe League begins mid-May at Ted Williams Camp. Camp entrance is next to the police station at 323 Bedford St. (Route 18), Lakeville. The league meets on Wednesday afternoons at 2:30 p.m. throughout the summer. Participation is free, some horseshoes are provided. Contact Debby at 774-240-0607 for more information. 

Digital Literacy and Computer Instruction classes will be held on Thursdays at the COA at 1 p.m. There will be six sessions with four classes per session. Classes are 2-3 hours. Cost is $10 per session. Payment is due at sign-up. There are six available spaces per session. Speak with the office once you have decided which class to sign up for. Dates of classes are as follows:

July: 11, 18, 25 and August 1. 

August: 8, 15, 22, 29

September: 5, 12, 19, 26

October: 3, 10, 17, 24

November: Thursdays 7, 14, 21 & Friday 22

December: Thursdays 5, 12, 19, 20 & Friday 21

The COA’s six new laptops and instructor for these classes were funded by The Senator Rodrigues Community Empowerment Fund of the South Coast Community Foundation. 

The COA will offer computer classes to help residents learn more about how to care for laptops, use email and video chat with family and friends. Classes will be led by Jennifer Shallcross from ChalkTalk Technology and laptops will be provided. Sign-ups are required.
