Middleboro Gas and Electric to increase electricity rates by 7%

Dec 20, 2023

MIDDLEBORO — Effective Jan. 1 2024, the Middleboro Gas and Electric Department will be increasing its electricity rate from 14 cents a kilowatt hour to 15 cents a kilowatt hour, which is an approximately 7% increase.

In a press release, the Middleboro Gas and Electric Department claimed that its rates were lower than those in nearby towns. “We continue to offer rates that are more than 30% lower than that of neighboring investor-owned utility communities at a time when electric rates in New England are seeing double digit increases,” the press release said.

According to the press release, the increase in costs is due to “higher regional transmission charges” and “unpredictable costs from two ISO-NE reliability arrangements for the Mystic Generating Station.”

“MGED’s rates remain among the lowest in the region, which includes other municipal light plant towns like Mansfield, Taunton, and Braintree,” the press release continued.
