May 3, 2024

MIDDLEBORO — Outdoor water restrictions are now in place in Middleboro through Sept. 30.

Nonessential outdoor watering hours are restricted to before 9 a.m. and after 5 p.m.

Even-numbered addresses may engage in nonessential outdoor water use on Tuesdays and Fridays only.

Odd-numbered addresses may engage in nonessential outdoor water use on Mondays and Thursdays only.

There is no non-essential outdoor use of water on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday.

On the designated days, water uses that are allowed before 9 a.m. and after 5 p.m. include: Irrigation to establish a new lawn and new plantings during the months of May and September; irrigation of public parks and recreational fields with automatic sprinklers outside the hours; and irrigation of lawns, gardens, flowers and ornamental plants with a hand-held hose.

Nonessential outdoor water uses that are restricted include irrigation of lawns via sprinklers or automatic irrigation systems; washing of vehicles, except in a commercial car wash or as necessary for driver safety; washing exterior building surfaces, parking lots, driveways or sidewalks, except to apply surface treatments such as paint, preservatives, stucco, pavement or cement.

Further restrictions may be implemented based on streamflow data from the Taunton River.

Anyone violating these water restrictions will receive a warning for the first violation, a $100 fine for the second violation and $250 for each subsequent violation.

Water restrictions are a mandatory action from the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection and are not caused by water supply issues, Water Superintendent Michael Bumpus said.

“These restrictions are a mandate from MassDEP, in order to preserve stream health and the survivability of fish,’’ he said.
