Kindergarteners attend School Committee meeting after journey around the world

MIDDLEBORO — The Middleboro School Committee was joined by a group of special guests at its meeting on Thursday, Jan. 4.

A group of kindergarten students from Memorial Early Childhood Center attended the meeting and spoke to the committee about an event called, “Holidays around the World,” which every kindergarten student at the school participated in.

Memorial Early Childhood Center Kindergarten Teacher Carly Paling said the event helps teach students about traditions and cultures from around the globe.

“Given the vast diversity in our school district we really felt it was important to give all kindergarten kids the same experience and really engulf them in different celebrations,” said Paling. “It really helps teach these kids about tolerance and about diversity.”

According to Paling, each classroom featured different cultures and students moved from room to room to learn about many different places and holidays.

“These are the parts of school that [students] are going to remember,” said Paling, who thanked the amount of support the school’s kindergarten teachers received from Memorial Early Childhood Center Principal Jeremy Gobeil and the parents of participating students.

Paling then gave some students the chance to step up to the microphone to share part of their itinerary.

“We went to China to celebrate Chinese New Year,” said five-year-old Christian DaSilva. “We made a lantern and a dragon.”

“We went to Sweden and made St. Lucia crowns,” said five-year-old Juliana Houghton. “Do you like my hat?” Houghton, who was wearing a St. Lucia crown, asked the committee.

“Then we went to Italy, [where] there’s a witch named La Befana who brings presents,” Houghton explained.

The event takes place every December at Memorial Early Childhood Center.
