Lakeville hits hole-in-one with library mini golf event

LAKEVILLE – Children and adults came to putt their way through aisles of books at the Lakeville Public Library on Sunday April 21.

They came to partake in the fifth edition of the mini golf at the library event, put on by Friends of the Lakeville Public Library. With equipment provided by Mobile-MiniGolf, the library was transformed into an 18-hole miniature golf course.

The event went from 12:00 to 4 p.m. By 1:30 p.m., nearly 100 people had already come through the library doors, event organizers said. Families enjoyed the activity at no cost, but donations were accepted.

The goal of the event was to get people more familiar with the library and the wealth of resources it offers, from art exhibits, to computers to a very knowledgeable staff, President of Friends of the Lakeville Public Library Maria Martin said.

“I think a lot of people just think that it’s a building where there are books,” she said. “They don’t realize it has so many things to offer… It’s a great place to be.”

“We definitely want to bring the community in and let people see the wonderful things that happen here at our library,” she added.

This was the third year that the Hirsch family attended the event. Itching to get to the next hole, six-year-old Lark Hirsch stated that mini golf “is just a fun thing to do.”

Though she hadn’t yet gotten a hole-in-one, she pointed out that she had come close with a hole-in-two.

For her brother Oscar, 9, the best part was “beating dad,” he said.

Father Matt Hirsch said that when they came in years past, it was raining and the entire course was inside. The addition of holes outside the building this year was “a new treat.”

Some children hit the ball straight into the hole while others found more creative ways to reach the end goal. Those who scored a hole-in-one included dedicated mini golfer Landon Dean, six-year-old Julien Souza and six-year-old Coltin Martin.

Fittingly, Dean said his favorite part about mini golf is “getting a hole-in-one.”

Families came out for all sorts of reasons. Dean’s mother said playing mini golf is one of Landon's and his sister Sadie’s favorite activities. “The kids love mini golf so it just seemed like a good thing to do,” she shared.

Magda Souza likes to go to events at different libraries with her son Julien, who scored a hole-in-one on the first hole. “It’s a great thing for [the kids] to do on the weekends, especially if it’s cold or raining. They always have something going on.”

She said going to these events is a great way to encourage kids to read and makes it a point to frequent the library with her children. “We go every week to pick up books.”
