Lakeville students outperform state in MCAS

LAKEVILLE – The majority of Lakeville-Freetown students met or partially met expectations for both English and math Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS) tests in 2023. 

Lakeville-Freetown students outperformed the state in both categories. Generally, their scores improved from last year’s scores. 

2023 English scores for students in grades three through eight changed slightly from last year.

In 2023, 43% of students in grades three through eight partially met expectations for English, 40% of students met expectations while 12% did not meet expectations. Six percent of students exceeded expectations compared to four percent in 2022. 

Forty-three percent of students in grades three through eight met expectations for math in 2023, 42% of students partially met expectations and 9% did not meet expectations. 

In 2022, 45% of students grades three through eight met expectations for math, 43% partially met expectations and 8% did not meet expectations. 

Forty-three percent of tenth grade students met expectations in English in 2023, 30% partially met expectations and 11% did not meet expectations. 

In 2022, 49% of tenth grade students met expectations in English, 34% partially met expectations and 8% of students did not meet expectations. 

In 2023, 15% of tenth grade students exceeded expectations in English while 9% exceeded expectations in 2022. 

According to Director of Curriculum and Assessment Teri Fleming,  basic writing conventions are an area of growth for students in grades three through five.

 Fleming explained that some students used shorthand in their written responses. 

“Why? Because we don’t have them typing, so they are typing on the computer like they text,” said Fleming.
